Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Jerry on Broadway?

I was streaming the French's Camp show from 8-29-87 at Wolfgang's this morning and in the "info" section it mentioned that this acoustic Jerry Band had an extended stay on Broadway later that year. Anyone have the 411 on this? Do any of these shows circulate? Thanks.

yes that is correct, the Lunt-Fontanne shows, from 10/15 to 10/31, i believe that the Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band would perform an early acoustic set, followed by an electric set/show (not really sure about the exact arrangement, or if the arrangements were followed each night), but apparently, these shows were seriously difficult for tapers to record as the security was quite vigilant about preventing tapers from recording; there are some pretty amusing/amazing stories behind some of the sets which have been recorded; i think most nights there are recordings which circulate, and of varying quality, with even a soundboard recording here and there; as for the performances, some are quite good, some just so-so; i can hook you up of course ...

The 10-31-87 early and late shows are apart of the pure Jerry series. It's ok. Have to say I do like Crazy Love as an encore

I think that there is also an official release from Jerry's estate that might be a compilation of the shows.

Thanks. Now I am feeling a little guilty about this exchange:

Jeez! Thanks for pointing that one out. I had missed it. I couldnt possibly take offense at a comment by someone who listens to GD music from 1968!

It's all good in da hood.

I have to admit, though I'm not a huge JGB fan, I did enjoy the two Lunt Fontaine shows I attended. There was very little of the filthy patchouli smelling riff raff you had to deal with at cesspools like the Hampton Coliseum, Nassau, etc...

There are both a full show release (sorry don;t know off the top of my head which show) and a "best of the rest" collection that the JG site used to sell. I don't even know if that site is still there. If they are no longer for sale I'm sure *someone* could hook you up.

Thanks I'm on it. Sounds like the taper (Joe D'Amico) confirms what Arb said about guards harassing the tapers.

Dewd! I have my two Play Bills framed - one at home and one sits in my office so that Jer gives the magic stare to all who dare enter. I went to 3 nights - the first being the night the market "crashed".

notes: * drop out on master - as I remember this was due to the two alligator clips on the ends of my patch cord making contact each other. Electrical tape was administered and the tape rolled on. Very little missing.
+ abrupt level adjustment at start
^ harsh cut towards the end - although I knew I needed to flip the tape I had to chat with a security person. He found it interesting that I was spending the entire evening in the downstairs lobby sitting on the floor by the ladies room. I told him I loved the way it sounded by the set of speakers set up down there. Satisfied, he turned and I flipped the tape. A couple of minutes are missing.

more story: After making hideous auds of the first two nights I came up with the idea of somehow splicing into the speakers set up in the downstairs lobby/rest room area of the theater. It was essential that the speaker still get a signal or it would draw attention that it'd been messed with. I made up a set of patch cords with alligator clips soldered on the ends and sneeked in the trusty D5 and
a pair of sewing scissors. After cutting into the speaker wire I clamped on the alligator clips and away we went. The speaker played fine and the deck was getting a perfect signal. After 10/17 I tried again at the 10/21 evening show. Another taper patched out of me with a D6 at this one. This taper had gotten away with a "stealth board"
that afternoon at the matinee and he hooked me up with a cm>c 1st gen. I remember we had to bail that night towards the end of the acoustic set, but I think I have 40 min's or so on dat somewhere. Although this method of taping produced a few gems, I must add the disclaimer that
I would not recomend messing with any band's equipment. Ever. Anywhere. That having been said I hope you enjoy the tape. Rob
